Tasting wine is an art. Not everyone takes to wine unless they try it the right way and with the right kinds of food. Step 1: Take A Close Look
Looking at the wine in a bottle can be deceiving. To be able to know the actual color of the wine, you need to be able to look at it in a wine glass. When you look at the wine, look for every aspect that stands out. Colour, transparency and the texture are what you need to observe at first. The actual appearance of the wine will tell you about what you can expect from it. If you are, however, stuck with only a bottle to pick and have no means to a glass, then you will have to choose by the description on the bottle and base it on your experience of year and variety.
Step 2: Sniff the Wine
It is said that 90% of taste comes from smell. However, before you can taste your wine, it is important to smell it to allow your nose to make an individual judgment. There is much you can find within the smell of the wine. Ask yourself which is the first scent that hits your senses. You should be able to make a distinction between the grape and other fruits that reach you.
The second thing you can get from the smell is the kind of practice used to make the wine. Almond, cheese, peanut or stale beer are some of the smells you would get in white wine, as a secondary smell. Think of it as the ingredients that are added when making the wine, apart from the primary one.
The last and final scent will tell you the age of the wine. These smells are to do with the container in which the wine is stored. Tobacco, spices, vanilla, leaves and roasted nuts are some of the smells that tell you the age of the wine. Unless the wine was stored in an oak casket, the smells are very distinctive when served from the bottle.
Step 3: Taste
Use three senses in your mouth to understand the wine. Taste, texture and the time are three indications to complete your tasting experience before you pass judgment. Depending on the type of grape, you will be able to tell the grape by its acidic taste. The sweetness of the wine can never be inhaled as the sense is purely on the tongue. Let yourself try different types of grapes and see how they taste with age and added flavors. The texture of the wine is what you feel when you taste it. For example, the dry feeling in your mouth after drinking a red is from the tannin in wines. See how long the wine lasts on your tongue to complete the tasting experience.
Step 4: Conclude
Use your judgment and decide how you would describe the wine. Wine to each person is different, and many people have different likes. The types of acid in an individual’s mouth can also greatly affect how wine is tasted. Depending on your likes, you might decide that the wine is something you would try again. If not, you would have learned something about the wine and chose to mix and match the aromas and tastes the next time.
