The Magic Behind Oenology – Winemaking

Making wine sounds like it can be a very tough task. There are people who make wine right at home with no effort and make the process look so easy though. If you have good quality of grapes, then it is easy for anyone to make wine at home. Following a set procedure and with the right ingredients readily available in stores, you can soon master oenology.

The Basics of Making Wine

The first people who made wine just put some grapes into a pot and buried it after sealing it carefully. When the pot was taken out years later, there was wine in its purest raw form. Today the entire process of wine is very careful to be able to get the right flavours and possibly not poison you too. There are ingredients that you will need to add to the grapes before fermenting, to make sure you don’t spoil the wine. For example, when you add oak to the grapes when fermenting, it makes sure that the wine has some added texture.

It does not matter which type of wine you try to make. Red or white, you need to get the juice from the fruit to come out without any of the pieces of pulp, or the stalks. The biggest difference in making white or red wine mainly is in the time taken before you consume it. The other difference is that white wines use only the grape juice, whereas, the reds need skin.

Equipment Kits and Ingredients

You can make wine with equipment that will cost you about $100. There are several brewery supply stores available online that can give you the equipment as a kit. Make sure you sterilize all the equipment before you use it, so that you can get it right the very first time you attempt making wine.

While selecting the grapes for making your wine, choose fresh grapes. There are specific wine grapes that you can purchase, however, you can even use the usual grapes you get from the supermarket too. Other ingredients that you will need are Tartaric acid, yeast and Bentonite. For added flavour you can get oak chips as well, however, this is optional.

The Actual Process

After you have sterilized the equipment, let them completely dry. Choose your grapes perfectly. Discard any fruit which might seem spoilt. Even if it is partially spoilt, discard it. Next thing you should do is start crushing the grapes. When grapes are made professionally there is large equipment to crush it, however, in the home setting, you can use a strainer or just your hands and feet.

Crush the grapes so that you get the juice out completely. Put the remains into a large bucket and stomp on it after you have filled it up. This will give you a little more juice. Put all that into a bucket after you have strained it. If you repeat the process, you will be able to get most of the pulp out.

After you taste the initial juice, it’s time to ferment. You can ferment the juice naturally by locking the container you are using. Make sure the seal is tight. After 48 hours you can open it and see that the fermentation has started. If the fermentation process has not begun, then you can add a little yeast. Check for the time when the wine’s sediments are settled at the bottom of the barrel. Once this happens, and if you like the taste you have achieved, the wine is good to be consumed.
